Competition Rules


The SAB / CBSA National Craft Brewer Championship Rules 2015 – Additional Cider Entries Only:

    1. The National Craft Brewer Championship (Competition) is brought to you by The South African Breweries (Pty) Limited (SAB) and Craft Beer South Africa (CBSA).
    2. 2. The Competition is arranged and managed by SAB (Organisers) with judging done according to the Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP) Guidelines by qualified BJCP judges {Judges).
    3. 3. The Competition will be registered with the Beer Judge Certification Program and the judging process will follow the BJCP’s competition procedure manual.
    4. 4. The most recent version (2015) of the BJCP Style Guidelines will be used. The guidelines are available in PDF format from The Beer Judge Certification Program – www.bjcp.org..
    5. The Competition is open to all licensed microbreweries operating in South Africa only, and the person entering the cider (Product) must be over the age of 18. The Competition is not open to employees of SAB and CBSA, their suppliers – including but not limited to – merchandisers, advertising, promotional and PR agencies, and all their immediate families.
    6. All Products entered must be available to consumers generally from the microbrewery, a retail outlet or be sold at a regional or national beerfest. This includes contract brewers. The Organisers reserve the right to request proof of this at any time.
    7. By entering the Competition, you agree that you have the authority to enter the Product on behalf of the microbrewery where it is brewed.
    8. Each microbrewery can enter up to three (3) different ciders.
    9. An online entry form must be completed for each cider style entered (http://www.sab.co.za/beer-culture).
    10. You may enter any regularly brewed Product, provided it fits into one of the categories of the BJCP style guidelines, available on www.bjcp.org. No cider style has been excluded from the Competition.
    11. It is your responsibility to ensure that the Product is entered in the category, (as defined in the 2015 BJCP Style Guidelines), that best represents that Product or its intended character.
    12. The Competition opens at 8am on Thursday 19 November 2015 and closes at 5pm on Friday 27 November 2015.
    13. You must deliver 4 x 330ml or 3 x 440/500ml or 2 x 1L samples of each cider entered into the Competition in either branded or unbranded bottles.
    14. Should samples be branded, Judges under the supervision of the auditors will decant the liquid into unmarked jugs prior to judging.

    16. Samples must be delivered during office hours between 8am on Thursday 19 November 2015 and 5pm on Friday 27 November 2015.
    17. Judging, led by the Convenor of Judges, will be done on Saturday 28 November 2015 in line with BJCP guidelines and audited by Grant Thornton.
    18. The winners will be announced at an event at the SAB Central Office on 3 December 2015.
    19. The Judges will award a first, second and third prize each to the best beers and the best ciders entered.
    20. In addition, a panel of journalists will judge the ciders entered and award a Journalist’s Choice Award.
    21. Prizes for the cider category are as follows:
      1. First prize:
        1. R50 000 cash from SAB
      2. Second prize:
        1. R30 000 cash from SAB
      3. Third prize:
        1. R10 000 cash from SAB
    22. Prizes for the Journalist Choice Award are as follows:
      1. Best Cider
        1. All inclusive participation in SAB’s annual Heritage Tour to George, Caledon and Cape Town for 2 people sponsored by SAB
    23. Winners will be announced in the media and will be available to view on SABStories.co.za.
    24. The Organisers reserve the right to amend the prizes at its reasonable discretion.
    25. All participants and winners indemnify SAB, its directors, affiliates, members, partners, employees, agents, consultants, suppliers, contractors and sponsors against any loss or damages, either direct, indirect, consequential or otherwise, arising from its participation in this Competition. Prior to awarding the prizes, SAB may require you to sign such an indemnity.
    26. All participants and winners indemnify CBSA, its directors, affiliates, members, partners, employees, agents, consultants, suppliers, contractors and sponsors against any loss or damages, either direct, indirect, consequential or otherwise, arising from its participation in this Competition. Prior to awarding the prizes, CBSA may require you to sign such an indemnity.
    27. The Organisers may amend, modify or otherwise change these Competition rules in its sole and absolute discretion at any time with no notice to you and the amended version will be displayed in the same media as these Competition rules. By participating or continuing to participate in the Competition, you agree and understand that you will be bound by these Competition rules.
    28. If any dispute arises regarding any aspect of this Competition – whether relating to results, eligibility or the rules generally – the decision of the Organisers will be final and no correspondence or discussion will be entered into.
    29. The Organisers reserve the right to cancel the Competition at any time.
    30. The Competition is audited by Grant Thornton. Deviation from the rules may result in disqualification. You may be subjected to an audit to ensure your eligibility to participate.
    31. No late or incomplete entries will be considered.
    32. The Judges’ decision is final.
    33. You must be at least 18 years of age to participate.
    34. By agreeing to the Competition rules you understand that SAB and CBSA reserve the right to use any entry, including the name and style of the beer or cider, and your name, to promote or publicise the SAB / CBSA National Craft Brewer Championships. Any objections to this requirement needs to be made in writing to jessica.yellin@za.sabmiller.com by the close of Competition on 27 November 2015 at 5pm
