Prosper is SAB’s holistic approach to sustainable development. It is indicative of the kind of world that the company wants to contribute towards, by committing SAB to publically-stated targets. SAB aims to help create a thriving world, in which entrepreneurs and small enterprises can flourish through initiatives like the Social Innovation Awards, developed by the SAB Foundation.

Founded in 2009 as part of SAB Zenzele, the SAB Foundation aims to contribute to the empowerment of historically disadvantaged communities and ignite a culture of entrepreneurship and innovation in South Africa. Since 2010, the SAB Foundation has supported 260 enterprises at a total investment of close to R50-million.

Promoting
Social
Innovation

South Africa’s culture of innovation remains largely untapped. This is why the inaugural SAB Foundation’s Social Innovation Awards were introduced in 2011 – to stimulate, promote and reward innovation and address the daily challenges facing people in low-income areas.

The awards are open to any innovation solution – either a product or a process – that addresses a challenge faced by the SAB Foundation’s target beneficiary groups: women, the youth, persons with disabilities and rural communities. Emphasis is placed on innovations that are scalable and can be commercialised.

The awards have unearthed some game-changing innovations in the past, like lifesaving malaria tests, affordable instant food gardens and solar technologies.

This year, the Social Innovation Awards celebrate 5 years of commitment of improving the lives of some of the country’s most vulnerable inhabitants, by empowering innovators and entrepreneurs.

The 2015 winners will be announced at the awards ceremony on Thursday the 15th of October. Find out more about the 14 finalists here.

Grassroots
Support

The SAB Foundation also invests in micro, small and medium enterprises through the Tholoana Enterprise Programme – a holistic intervention providing small businesses with development support, skills training, mentoring and seed capital, with a focus on black-owned enterprises. Since its inception in 2011, the TEP has invested over R28 million into more than 210 businesses.

Empowering
farmers

The Thriving World pillar extends to the agricultural sector. SAB supports the emerging farmer by developing a sustainable, reliable and commercially competitive local agricultural footprint.Initiatives like Go Farming and Better Barley Better Beer help create jobs, strengthen the local economy and build SAB’s supply chain.

By empowering entrepreneurs, who in turn create more jobs, SAB is contributing to securing a sustainable future for all, including the future of the business.
