From its humble beginnings in 1895 when Charles Glass first started brewing it at the Castle Brewery in Johannesburg, Castle Lager has brought people together.
The new beer soon became popular among the hard-working, prospectors of the gold rush, and in 1889 one of Johannesburg's early newspapers, the Digger's News, declared it "a phenomenal success." Today, Castle Lager is brewed in nine countries and regularly enjoyed in over 40 countries worldwide.
Even in the brewing process, it all comes together naturally. No artificial flavouring, additives or preservatives but only natural ingredients are used: the finest quality malted barley, maize, hops and water.
The process has not changed in over 100 years, and creating one bottle of this legendary beer still takes no less than seven weeks. After 12 days of brewing and fermenting and six days of maturation, the brew undergoes a series of rigorous quality approvals. It is only when we are absolutely sure that every ingredient has come together perfectly, that each bottle is allowed to leave the brewery as a Castle Lager.
It is difficult to master the art of brewing a beer with such distinctive taste - a taste that brings together the best of dry and the best of bitter. That is why Castle Lager Brewmasters have more experience than Brewmasters of other beers.
