SAB and Uber partner to contribute to the safety of SA’s roads this festive season

SAB and Uber partner to contribute to the safety of SA’s roads this festive season

With the festive season around the corner, South Africans prepare for an influx of drivers under the influence of alcohol to hit the roads and put innocent lives at risk. Drunk driving accounts for 27.1% of all fatal car accidents in South Africa, according to research conducted by the Road Traffic Management Corporations (RTMC).

To champion responsible consumption of alcohol over this holiday season, the South African Breweries (SAB) has partnered with Uber to contribute to the safety of SA’s roads. Together, SAB and Uber will be sponsoring the costs of trips booked through the Uber App to and from select suburbs in Johannesburg. It’s our intention that nobody gets behind the wheel intoxicated.

The initiative forms part of SAB’s long standing #NoneFortheRoad campaign and will target drunk driving. The campaign will run throughout the festive season and will be slowly phased out as South Africans return to daily life in the new year.

Heidi Bartis, Director of communities from SAB says, “We have always believed that one should never drive after drinking. Not even after one beer. Every experience with our beer should be a positive one, and that experience should always be top of mind even with getting home safely and therefore not putting any one in needless danger. A partnership with Uber was a natural choice to achieving this mission.”

“At Uber, we aspire to be an active participant in the eradication of drunk driving in South Africa. This partnership with SAB forms part of our unwavering commitment to providing a seamless travel experience, where safety is prioritised. We call on those eligible for this offer to make a conscious choice so they can get home to their loved ones,” says Mpho Sebelebele, Head of Communications for Uber South Africa.

Customers will be able to retrieve their voucher on the Uber app, using a unique code, where they can book a ride and qualify for a R100 off of a trip on a night out in Johannesburg and R100 off of a trip that can be used to go back home. Offer valid from 14 December 2021 to 31 December 2021 between 17:00 and 00:00.

“We have all endured a difficult few years. I know that South Africans are prone to letting off steam during the festive season. But we can do so without putting our fellow South Africans and ourselves in danger. Let us all endeavour to be responsible this festive season. If you drink. Don’t drive. It’s that simple. In this digital age, there are always alternative ways to get home safely. We hope that this campaign gives South Africans the option to do just that,” says Bartis.
