A DAY DEDICATED TO ONE OF THE WORLDS OLDEST PROFESSIONS

THE MAN WHO SERVES YOU YOUR DRAUGHT

Traces of bartending can be found back in Ancient Greece, Rome and Asian societies working in what were called 'public drinking houses.' Most of the bartenders during that time brewed their own drinks as well as owned their own alehouses.

The way we now celebrate occasions has been shaped by bartenders throughout history. It is the history and antiquity that evolved the liquid that we all enjoy at the end of a hard day, or with a friend, at a birthday, at a football game, or just because it’s a Wednesday and you deserve that beer.

THE MAN OF THE HOUR, BAFANA!

Bafana, our resident bartender at the World of Beer has been a bartender at the World of Beer for over three years. He has built on his thirst for knowledge, the love of the brew and appreciation for his customers to become the bartender he is today – one that is always happy to see you and to hand over that draught with a smile!

We got to know Bafana a little better, let's see what he says about the profession he shares with his fellow bartenders from ancient times.

World of Beer hosts a wide variety of African beers from Castle Lager to Sibebe, Impala and Jacob's Pale Ale.  Which beer is your favourite and why?

Castle Milk Stout because it sets the right tone for any occasion! I find it's very fulfilling.

What do you love most about your job?

I get to meet people from all around the world. I get the opportunity to interact with new faces and it makes me happy to do so. I am always ready and eager to serve them our brews and tell them about our beers and our heritage.

How do you ensure that guests and patrons have a memorable experience when you serve them?

I always greet my guests with a smile. And always make sure that my beer is fresh, served at the right temperature and that it's served in a clean glass – no other way!

What is required in prepping the bar before each shift?

I have to make sure that all the fridges are stocked with fresh beer, that the kegs have beer in them – if they don't, I replace them. I make sure that there are bar snacks on the bar ready for patrons. I also do the stock taking of beer, soft drinks, bar snacks and make sure that we have enough glassware that is clean. Serving beer in a dirty glass is a definite no!

What is the best way to get a bartender's attention?

I make eye contact with my patrons as soon as they walk into the Taproom! I ensure that I attend to my patrons either immediately or as soon as I finish with another guest.

What is the busiest periods for you?

From Thursday to Saturday.

What advice do you have for new bartenders?

Always be energetic – smile! Empower yourself with knowledge of what you serve, go beyond just recommending beers, recommend the food dishes that would go with specific beers. Be passionate about what you do, and you will love each day of work.
