The Radium Beer Hall

The Radium Beer Hall is not only a Johannesburg institution, but the city’s oldest surviving pub and grill. Since it opened its doors in 1929, the Radium has been a meeting place for people from all over town. From its 100 year-old Burmese teak bar, to the memorabilia and photographs on the walls, every inch of the Radium has a story to tell. We chatted to owner Manny Cabeleira about the history of the Radium, from its beginnings as a tearoom to its transformation into one of Johannesburg’s best-loved venues – a place where men and women can listen to some live jazz and enjoy each other’s company over a delicious meal and an ice cold beer.
