SAB Announces SAB Environmental Media Awards & Environmentalist of the Year 2015

Johannesburg, 12th August 2015: The South African Breweries (SAB) is proud to announce that entries for the SAB Environmental Media and Environmentalist of the Year Awards 2015 have opened.

The Awards, now in their 27th year, recognise excellence in the field of Environmental Journalism across all media channels.

“Over the last few years, we have worked closely with our media and non-media stakeholders to ensure our competition keeps evolving, ” says Robyn Chalmers, Head of Corporate Communications at SAB. “Through this constant dialogue we have ensured the Awards remain relevant and aspirational - something we are extremely proud of.”

The categories for the SAB Environmental Media and Environmentalist of the Year 2015 are as follows:

  • Written Media Award (Print and Online)
  • Photography Award (Print and Online)
  • Video Media Award (Television and Online)
  • Audio Media Award (Radio and Online)

The Magqubu Ntombela and Ian Player Cub Award for environmental journalists with less than two years' experience in the Industry.

Nick Steele Memorial Award for the Environmentalist of the Year.

All Main category winners will receive a cash prize of R25, 000 while merit winners each receive R3, 000. The winner of the Magqubu Ntombela and Ian Player Cub Award will receive R15, 000 prize money. The Nick Steele Memorial Award winner does not receive a monetary prize.

“These awards have always been an opportunity to not only reward excellence, but also inspire young Environmental journalists to enter, ” continues Chalmers. “And year-on-year we have seen a fantastic growth in the number of entrants as well as an increase in the quality of our entries. And we are confident to continue this trend this year.”


Entrants for the SAB Environmental Media Awards and Environmentalist of the Year 2015 should submit work produced between 1st September 2014 and 31st August 2015 through the Online Awards Portal at

Entries opened at 08:00am on Tuesday 11th August 2015 and close at 17:00 on Friday, 4th September 2015.

Winners will be announced at an awards’ breakfast on Tuesday, 20th October 2015 at Summer Place in Hyde Park, Johannesburg.
