SAB KickStart: 20 years of empowering entrepreneurs

20 years of SAB KickStart2015 is a significant year. SAB not only celebrates 120 years of brewing South Africa’s best-loved beers, but also 20 years of SAB KickStart – an innovative and respected youth entrepreneurship development programme that has provided thousands of young people across the nation with life-changing opportunities.

SAB has been involved in empowerment programmes since the 1970s. KickStart is in some ways the culmination of the decades of learning, and is symbolic of SAB’s commitment to assist young business owners in making a meaningful contribution to society.

Today KickStart has become a platform to stimulate sustainable enterprise development, empowering young entrepreneurs who have great ideas, but lack the funding or know-how to grow their business.

The annual competition targets black youth between the ages of 18 and 35 and provides them with rigorous business skills training, mentorship, as well as loan and grant funding. After an extensive interview and selection process, 60 national semi-finalists join a robust business skills training bootcamp. 18 finalists are then chosen to take part in a business development support programme, culminating in an award ceremony to celebrate the Top 5 entrepreneurs who stand to win additional grant funding.
