START, GROW AND INNOVATE TOWARDS A SUSTAINABLE BUSINESS.

Biz on Tap Series 2 has just launched! Series 1 provided info on the fundamentals required to start your own business with a six-part video series. Series 2 provides insight into how you can join a supply chain through obtaining and retaining your customers, and overall strategies for growth as a revenue generating business.

For more information on Biz on Tap Series 2, we chatted to Zandile Nqoko to give us an idea of what learnings we can take from this seven-part series and the role she played in bringing it to life.

Can you describe Biz on Tap in one sentence for us?

Biz on Tap an on the go, interactive, knowledge inspiring YouTube series that shares critical aspects on how to start, grow and innovate towards a sustainable business.

What has been your role at South African Breweries and why did you apply for the position?

I’m a Senior Business Coach. I applied for the job as I have a passion to change people’s lives by empowering them to do it themselves!
Through Enterprise and Supplier development, I am able to grow people and help develop their businesses. Additionally, seeing them achieve their full potential is a reward like no other.

How did you get involved in the Biz on Tap Project and what was your role throughout the process?

As a business coach, part of my job is to conduct training and workshops on a continuous basis. I love teaching and imparting knowledge almost as much as I love learning, so my director at the time thought I would be the perfect fit to present Series 2 of Biz on Tap. It’s my honour and great privilege to be part of this amazing project.

You’re a business coach at SAB, does that mean that you coach suppliers within the SAB supply chain? And do you do any internal training?

My job entails understanding our supply chain, ensuring inclusion and transformation. This is done through a huge amount of research and bringing in high potential black suppliers to participate in our supply chain. As part of the support we give our suppliers, we conduct specialised training, business coaching and technical support. Additionally, we conduct masterclasses for entrepreneurs outside of our supply chain.

If you had to start your own business, what would be some of the fundamental things you would do first?

  • The first thing is to ensure a strong value proposition and a willing target market to pay for the product and/or service that you are offering.
  • Build channels to get your offering to your customers/clients.
  • Get your product out there: testing your product with your customer sooner rather than later is the best thing you can do for establishment and growth of your business.

For whom and how is the Biz on Tap series beneficial?

It’s for entrepreneurs: both start-up and mature business owners. The benefit is not from listening to the series but from putting it into action:

  • Being more equipped to start and grow a business
  • Using your networks optimally
  • Increased efficiencies
  • Access to market
  • Access to finance

Will there be any more Biz on Tap series in the future? Or any other big project we should keep an eye out for?

I definitely hope so. SAB Entrepreneurship is such a dynamic and creative space to work in – nothing is static. We are always creating new content, engaging and listening to our stakeholders and entrepreneurs, so watch this space for future opportunities.

What piece of advice would you give to entrepreneurs now, given the current economic situation within South Africa?

I would encourage entrepreneurs to be resilient during this tough economic time. These tough times are the best time to find pockets of opportunities for innovation and for doing things differently. As we go into our 4th industrial revolution, educate yourselves – only great success can come from your openness.
