Upcoming KickStart Ignite events

SAB KickStart Ignite kicked off in Durban on 21 August with a very inspiring Makerthon that hosted over 40 aspiring entrepreneurs who came to pitch their ideas for selection into the Ignite Makerthon.

20 of the best ideas were selected to attend the Makerthon the following day where they got a chance to develop their ideas further, attend workshops on business planning and play around with the technical equipment at the Makerspace. At the end of the Makerthon, 6 entrepreneurs were selected as the Durban winners who will now undergo  months of business incubation that will see them prototype their ideas and launch their startups.

If you’re an aspiring entrepreneur who has a commercially viable product or fantastic idea that’s aligned to the manufacturing or ICT industry and are between the ages of 18 to 35 living in Gauteng, Free State and Limpopo province, you can also still pitch your idea…

The next Ignite events will be:

• 11 September 2015 – TUT Pretoria West Campus
• 18 September 2015 - Central University of Technology (Bloemfontein)
• 2 October 2015 – University of Limpopo (Turfloop Campus)

Register by sending an email to kickstart@za.sabmiller.com, then make your way through to the venue to pitch your idea and convince the panel that it is good enough to develop into a viable start-up business. Then, if your great idea gets through, you might be invited back to attend a one-day Makerthon session, where your concept and business idea will be refined. After that, a select successful few will participate in a six-month incubation programme, where they’ll receive business mentorship, training, a monthly stipend and seed grant capital to get their start-up started.

ABOUT SAB KICKSTART IGNITE

SAB KickStart Ignite is one of three new enterprise development initiatives which are an extension of the 20-year-old youth entrepreneurship programme, SAB KickStart.

Along with SAB Kickstart Boost and SAB KickStart Elevate, the three programmes target and support youth-owned businesses at varying stages of operation.

SAB KickStart Ignite targets those young entrepreneurial makers of innovative products or services, and who through support from the programme, including incubation, grant funding and business support, can act as a pipeline for SAB KickStart Boost.

“I think the SAB programmes that help entrepreneurs and start-up companies will do so much good for the economy and society at large. Equipping young people with skills, knowledge and inspiration to literally change the world they live in is why the MakerSpace exists and we are truly excited to be involved with the SAB KickStart Ignite project, ” says Steve Gray Founder of the MakerSpace and member of the South African Maker Collective.

Enterprise Development is a key sustainable development priority for SAB. It is one of the underlying imperatives of SAB Prosper, the company’s global sustainable development framework aimed at building strong local communities. Within this imperative, SAB aims to support small enterprises to increase job creation in South Africa.
