
GEORGETOWN UNIVERSITY CASE STUDY ANALYSIS: HOW AB INBEV CONTRIBUTES TO THE REDUCTION OF HARMFUL ALCOHOL USE
The Business for Impact initiative at Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business in the United States recently released an in-depth case study on the current status of Anheuser-Busch InBev (AB InBev)’s Global Smart Drinking Goals (GSDGs). This is a ten-year voluntary initiative by AB InBev to reduce harmful use of alcohol. The GSDGs began in 2015 and will run until 2025. The report is an assessment of AB InBev’s progress during the first five years.

SAB TO INJECT R2 BILLION INTO SA ECONOMY, ENSURING THE BEER VALUE CHAIN IS AN ENGINE OF ECONOMIC RECOVERY
Following the conclusion of its annual business planning cycle, The South African Breweries (SAB) is pleased to announce that it has allocated a R2 billion capital investment for its South African operations. The allocation will include, but is not limited to upgrades to operating facilities, installation of new equipment at selected plants, product innovations and other necessary operating systems. This much needed R2 billion capital injection is earmarked for projects to be completed in the financial year 2022.

New B-BBEE scheme holds R5.4 billion worth of shares in AB InBev, world’s largest beer maker
The South African Breweries (SAB) has finally reached the much anticipated milestone, as SAB Zenzele Kabili has listed on the JSE today. The scheme was voted in at a special virtual meeting earlier this month, where SAB Zenzele shareholders cast their votes, with 95% voting in favour of the new scheme.

SAB Zenzele Shareholders vote in favour of new B-BBEE scheme at special virtual AGM
The South African Breweries (SAB) is pleased to announce that its latest B-BBEE scheme, SAB Zenzele Kabili will be listed on the JSE on 28 May 2021. At a special virtual special general meeting held for members of its current B-BBEE scheme, SAB Zenzele, a quorum was secured with 8339 shareholders casting their votes and 95% of the shareholders who voted, voted in favour of the new scheme, satisfying the requirement for listing.

MODERATION, NOT PROHIBITION IS THE ANSWER
The beer sector has sustained a great deal of damage following the blanket bans on alcohol, which resulted in over 100 days of restricted trading.
As we emerge from the near collapse of our industry, we must focus our efforts on promoting the responsible and moderate consumption of alcohol, to ensure that we are not faced with blanket bans in the future.

02 February 2021. The South African Breweries (SAB) welcomes the President’s decision to lift the ban on the sale of alcohol with immediate effect. SAB says the third ban, which was enforced from 29 December 2020, has meant a total of 5 weeks of lost sales. The three bans have had a devastating impact on the beer and broader alcohol value-chain. The accumulated effects severely threatened thousands of livelihoods from farmers, suppliers, logistics, retailers, small businesses and our valued employees. The loss of 165 000 jobs from previous bans is a stark reminder of some of the unintended consequences of prohibition
